Why Fleas Come Back After Treatment

You will keep seeing fleas after the first visit. That is the treatment working, not failing, and here is why.

20 to 50

eggs a day from one female, falling off the pet into carpet

18 days

for the full life cycle at normal room temperature

12 months

that a formed flea can wait inside its cocoon

The fleas on your pet are the end of the cycle, not the start. Eggs fall off into carpet, bedding, and the shaded dirt your dog lies in, then hatch on their own schedule. According to the UC Statewide IPM Program, whose flea guide is written by an entomologist at UC Riverside, a cocoon can sit for up to twelve months at cool temperatures and opens when it feels footsteps or a vacuum.

Sprays do not kill pupae. UC IPM is direct that fleas keep emerging for about two weeks after a treatment, and that the answer is to keep vacuuming rather than spray again. That is why our treatment carries a growth regulator that stops larvae from ever becoming biting adults, and why the 30-day follow-up is part of the price.

Vacuum daily for the first two weeks. It pulls pupae loose and brings new adults out onto treated surfaces, which is exactly where you want them.

Flea Treatment in Riverside: What a Visit Covers

Four parts, because fleas live in four places. Miss one and the cycle restarts.

1

Carpet and flooring

A growth regulator paired with a microencapsulated residual labeled for broadcast carpet treatment, applied where larvae actually develop at the base of the fibers.

2

Pet bedding and resting spots

A premise spray labeled for fleas, ticks, and their eggs and larvae goes on bedding, crates, and the couch corner the animal has claimed.

3

The shaded yard

Pet runs, fence lines, under decks, and the dirt patch your dog digs out. UC IPM notes larvae do not survive in open sun, so the treatment follows the shade.

4

The 30-day follow-up

We come back after the pupal window closes and treat whatever hatched out of it. This visit is in the price, not billed separately.

The animal itself is your veterinarian’s job. Book that appointment the same week, because treating the house without treating the pet restarts the cycle within days.

Wondering whether it is worth the visit at all? We ran the numbers in Is Pest Control Worth It?

What We Use and Why

We publish what we apply. Every product is EPA-registered and applied per label by state-licensed technicians, and every visit ends with clear re-entry times for kids and pets.

A growth regulator, on every flea job

Its active ingredient stops larvae from ever becoming biting adults, with residual control for up to seven months. This is the part that ends the cycle rather than thinning it.

A carpet-labeled residual

A microencapsulated professional residual labeled for indoor broadcast treatment including carpeting, so the product reaches the base of the fibers where larvae develop.

A premise spray for bedding

Labeled to kill fleas, ticks, and their eggs and larvae, with a no-drip application for pet bedding and resting areas. It also neutralizes pet odors while it works.

Why the store can fails

UC IPM notes that many California cat flea populations are resistant to pyrethroids, which is the active ingredient in most retail sprays. Foggers are worse, because they never reach the carpet base.

How to Prepare for Flea Treatment

Thirty minutes of prep is the difference between one treatment and three.

Vacuum everything first

Carpet, rugs, under furniture, along baseboards. Empty the canister outside into a sealed bag.

Wash pet bedding hot

Everything the animal sleeps on, plus throw blankets and whatever covers the couch.

Clear the floors

Toys, shoes, laundry, pet bowls. We need to reach the carpet and the baseboard line.

Book the vet the same week

We treat the house and yard. The animal is your vet’s job, and both have to happen.

Re-entry times before we leave.

Your technician tells you what was applied, where, and when kids and pets can use the space again. Same-day service across Riverside and Moreno Valley when you call before noon.

ONE SPECIES DOES ALMOST ALL OF IT

The Flea You Actually Have Is a Cat Flea

Most flea pages list three or four species. In California there is really only one worth planning around.

Fleas in dog fur

What it is
Ctenocephalides felis, under an eighth of an inch, reddish brown and flattened side to side. UC IPM calls it the most common ectoparasite on domestic cats and dogs, and states that fleas found on pets in California are most likely cat fleas.

Why the name misleads
It bites dogs, cats, and people. It is also the intermediate host for the tapeworm a pet can pick up by grooming, which is why a flea problem sometimes turns into a vet visit for something else.

Human flea

Dog fleas and human fleas
Both exist and both are rare here. UC IPM states plainly that dog fleas look like cat fleas but are rare in California. Identifying which one you have rarely changes the treatment, because the answer is almost always the cat flea.

Sticktight fleas
The exception worth knowing. These attach around the ears and eyes and come from ground squirrels and poultry, so they turn up on pets that roam. If that is what you are seeing, tell us when you call.

COMMON QUESTIONS

How Quickly Can an Exterminator Get Rid of Fleas?

How much does it cost for an exterminator to treat for fleas?

Flea and tick treatment in Riverside is $595. That covers the initial treatment indoors and out, the 30-day follow-up visit, and a 60-day warranty. Homes over 2,000 square feet are priced at inspection. If you are already on our mosquito program at $375 to start plus $135 a month, fleas and ticks are covered under it. Pricing is effective 2026 and confirmed at inspection.

Because the adults you see are the smallest part of the population. Eggs, larvae, and pupae are in the carpet, and UC IPM notes that a formed flea can wait inside its cocoon for up to twelve months at cool temperatures, then emerge when it feels footsteps. Killing adults without a growth regulator and a follow-up visit just clears the current wave.

The first visit knocks the adult population down the same day. Full control takes about a month, because UC IPM notes fleas keep emerging from pupae for roughly two weeks after treatment and re-treating during that window does not help. Vacuum daily through it, and the 30-day follow-up handles what hatched.

It is if you have already treated twice. Retail sprays reach adults on the surface and rarely reach larvae at the base of carpet fibers, and UC IPM notes that many California cat flea populations are resistant to the pyrethroids in most retail products. The other half of the answer is the pet, which is your veterinarian’s job either way.

Yes, in the house, with the treatment, the follow-up, and the pet handled at the same time. What you cannot do is make your yard permanently flea-free, because opossums, feral cats, and squirrels bring them back to shaded areas. That is what a recurring plan is for.

Nothing you can buy that also solves the problem. Vacuuming kills larvae outright and pulls preemerged adults out of their cocoons, which is genuinely useful and free. Foggers and bug bombs are the worst option, because UC IPM notes they fail to reach the base of carpet fibers where larvae actually develop.

Numbers climb through spring and peak in early summer, and our mild winters mean they never fully disappear. If your pet is scratching in January, that is normal here and it is worth treating rather than waiting for spring.

Yes, in the same service at the same price. The premise spray we use is labeled for fleas and ticks alike, and the brown dog tick is worth knowing about because it can complete its entire life cycle indoors, unlike most ticks.
