Short answer: Rats in a Riverside attic are almost always roof rats, and they got there from the roofline, not the ground. They climb citrus and palm trees, fence tops, and utility lines, then enter through a gap at the eave, an unscreened vent, or the space under the first course of roof tile. Getting them out takes three steps in order: trap, seal every entry, then monitor. A rodent inspection is $95, credited to the work.
The noise usually starts in fall because that is when Riverside nights cool and the citrus drops. The rats were already in the yard all summer. Here is why they moved in, what the sounds mean, and why the trap you set in the kitchen has been empty for a week.
How Do Rats Get Up in Your Attic?
Roof rats climb. According to the UC Statewide IPM Program, roof rats are agile climbers that live and nest above ground in shrubs, trees, and dense vegetation, and indoors they favor attics, wall voids, and false ceilings. They travel fence tops and overhead utility lines at night and routinely cover 300 feet or more to reach food.
In Riverside the route is usually a citrus or palm tree, a fence line, or a vine on the house. From there the rat reaches the roof and looks for a gap. UC IPM lists the ones that matter: openings larger than a quarter inch, damaged attic vent screens, unsealed gaps where the fascia meets the roof deck, and rooftop plumbing vents with no cap.
Eave and fascia gaps
The space where the roof deck meets the fascia board. The most common entry we find in Riverside tract homes.
Attic vents
Louvered gable vents and soffit vents with torn or missing screen behind them.
Tile roofs
The open ends under the first course of Spanish tile. Bird stop is often missing or crushed.
Roof penetrations
Plumbing vents, the AC line set, and the cable entry, all with gaps around them.
Our Riverside rodent control page walks through how the inspection maps these, roofline to crawl space.
Is It Normal to Have Rats in Your Attic?
In Riverside, yes. Roof rats are present in almost every California city, and UC IPM notes they prefer warm climates and residential areas with mature landscaping. That describes the Wood Streets, Canyon Crest, Orangecrest, and most of Moreno Valley. A yard with a mature orange tree, a date palm, and a fence line is roof rat habitat whether or not you have ever seen one.
Normal does not mean harmless. UC IPM is direct that roof rats in an attic can cause considerable damage and present fire risk from gnawing on wiring, and that rats can transmit typhus, leptospirosis, salmonella, and rat bite fever. They do not carry rabies.
What Do Rats in the Attic Sound Like?
Scratching and scurrying overhead, mostly between dusk and dawn. Rats are nocturnal. If the sound is above you, it is a roof rat in the attic. If it is low in the walls or under cabinets, it is more likely a mouse, and the whole approach changes. Our guide to scratching in the walls at night covers how to tell them apart by sound.
Other signs UC IPM lists: droppings the size of a rice grain, smudge marks where fur rubs along rafters and beams, shredded insulation pulled into a nest, and hollowed-out oranges still hanging on the tree outside.
Do Rats Leave the Attic During the Day?
They rest in it. Roof rats nest in the attic and climb down at night to feed, then come back before light. During the day you hear nothing, which is why people assume the problem went away after a quiet week. UC IPM notes that roof rats have very strong nest site affinity, meaning once they have chosen your attic they return to it even after the yard is cleaned up.
Does One Rat Mean More?
Yes. Roof rats average three to five litters a year with up to eight pups each, and they live in groups. The one you saw on the fence at dusk is the one that got noticed. Count droppings instead: a scattering along one route is a few animals, droppings in every corner of the attic is an established population.
What Month Are Rats Most Active in Riverside?
Outdoors, year round, because Riverside never gets cold enough to thin them out. Indoors, activity peaks from October through December when nights cool and the citrus drops. If you are hearing them in July, they never left.
Why the Trap Has Been Empty for a Week
Three reasons, and none of them mean the rats left.
The trap is on the wrong floor. Roof rats travel the roofline and come in at the eave. A snap trap on the kitchen floor is waiting for a mouse. UC IPM places roof rat traps off the ground, on ledges, beams, fence tops, and branches.
They avoid anything new. Rats are wary of unfamiliar objects on a route they know, a trait UC IPM calls neophobia and notes is stronger in roof rats than Norway rats. A trap untouched for a week is normal. The fix is to leave traps baited but unset until the bait is being taken, then set them all at once.
The hole got blocked before the rats were out. Sealing while rats are still inside traps them in the walls. A dead rat in a wall void is a smell that lasts weeks. Trap first, then seal every entry at the same time.
What Does Rat Removal From an Attic Cost in Riverside?
Three parts, priced separately, because a garage mouse and an attic colony are different jobs.
| Service | Price | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Rodent inspection | $95, credited to the work | Roofline to crawl space. Species confirmed, every entry point mapped, proofing estimate in writing. |
| Trapping and baiting | $250 for six stations | $15 per additional station. Monthly monitoring $75 with activity logged each visit. |
| Exclusion and proofing | Quoted at inspection | Roofline gaps, vent screens, garage seals, utility penetrations, in materials they cannot chew through. |
Pricing effective 2026, confirmed at inspection. Trapping usually runs two to four weeks from first set to confirmed quiet. Licensed PR 7461, Branch 2 and 3.
What Should I Do Tonight If I Hear Rats in My Attic?
Note where the sound is and what time. Put pet food away and pick up fallen fruit. Do not plug any holes yet. Do not put poison in the attic, because a rat that dies in a wall void is a worse problem than a live one, and California now restricts most anticoagulant rodenticides anyway.
Then book the inspection. The $95 comes off the job if you move forward, and the inspection is what tells you whether you have three rats or thirty. If the rats are coming from a palm, our post on why palm trees attract roof rats explains what to do about the tree.

Attic Rat Questions From Riverside Homeowners
How long can a rat live in an attic?
Indefinitely, as a population. Individual roof rats live about a year, but a colony with food outside and a nest inside replaces itself faster than it dies off. The attic stays occupied until the entries are closed.
Can you get sick from rats in your attic?
You can. UC IPM lists typhus, leptospirosis, salmonella and other food-borne illness, and rat bite fever as the common rat-transmitted diseases. Droppings and urine in attic insulation are the exposure route, which is why cleanup after removal matters and why you should not handle nesting material without gloves and a mask.
What smell do rats absolutely hate?
None that works for more than a day or two. UC IPM states there are no truly effective rat repellents registered for use in California and that rats quickly get used to ultrasonic devices. Peppermint oil and dryer sheets are a week of relief at best.
What is the fastest way to get rid of roof rats?
Enough traps, placed on the routes they actually use, set all at once after prebaiting. UC IPM recommends a dozen or more traps for a heavily infested home, spaced 10 to 20 feet apart. Fast comes from placement and quantity, and from sealing the routes so the attic does not refill.
Will rats leave the attic on their own?
No. A warm attic with citrus outside is exactly what a roof rat wants, and UC IPM notes their strong attachment to a chosen nest site. They leave when they are trapped out and the entries are closed, and not before.
